How often do you rake the buffer wheels (or how do you know when they need raked)?
I raked them before I used the first time and it was like a snow tornado in a blizzard, that stuff went EVERYWHERE, so I'm not looking to do if if I don't have to.
Its a StewMac 1" buffer with 2 buffs on each end.
I've only buffed 1 new guitar and 1 neck.
The red medium compound is getting pretty dark and spotty on the wheel.

Note: I’m not an expert so take this FWIW

To me the wheel looks to have too much compound caked on it. I would rake it out really well and then trim the face of the buff to get the face as flat and even as possible.

I give them a light rake and trim each time I start buffing a new instrument.

Read Brian’s comments in this thread on breaking in the buffs.

Problem with Menzerna or operator error?

Thanks for the info and the link to the thread. I didn't have problems with it, bit it just looked knarley. I raked it real good and reloaded it. It looks softer now without the dark cake. Buffed like a dream. From the thread you sent, the best practice seems to be to rake every time.

A new buff takes several rakings to calm down. Wear a dust mask and eye protection, and fire up your air filtration — it will still go everywhere in the shop. For having done only one guitar, that buff looks really heavily loaded.

You can definitely say it takes compound well.
I raked it and a lot of that compound came off too.
I've done more testing and sample cards than guitars....
Thanks for the feedback!
